Meet Lisa

Lisa Graduated from Ripon College in 2004 with a liberal arts degree in Educational Studies and History.

Over 15 years of educational experience:

  • Elementary Teaching
  • Substitute Teaching
  • Long-Term Substitute Teaching
  • Volunteering in her 4 Children’s Classrooms
  • Volunteering in PTO
  • Teaching Middle-School Science

Genius Hour began as a short week-long project to occupy students during state testing. It had such a positive impact on both myself and my students, I spent the following summer designing a year-long Genius Hour (in a box). The materials from this site are in their 3rd year of use in my 8th-grade science class. I am constantly looking for ways to hold students accountable, giving them as much freedom to direct their learning as possible, and make tracking progress more efficient for myself.

Are you interested in Professional Development that you can actually use within your classroom to positively impact teachers AND students? Are you struggling with inquiry-based teaching?

FAQ

Do you have a question that's not covered here? No problem, contact us and we'll do our best to help!

Can I share Genius Hour (in a box) with a colleague?

Please, share the website and encourage colleagues to also purchase Genius Hour (in a box). The licensed material is legally-bound to a single-teacher use, you agree to not share materials when you purchase Genius Hour (in a box).

Do my students need to be 1:1 on technology?

No. You are welcome to print materials and keep a binder/folder per student. Research is designed for Internet-based research, if you are unable to have students use Internet devices, please adjust research materials of Genius Hour (in a box).

Concerned about reaching resistant students?

Get to know your students. What do they do outside of school? Help connect them to a topic that they are interested in, involve parents/guardians as a positive assist to help the student find something that interests them.

Can Genius Hour (in a box) be used as a group project?

From my experience, Genius Hour works best as an individual project. It is possible to have small groups work together, but adjustments would need to be made to conferencing and assessment procedures to ensure all students are participating appropriately.

Concerned about students turning in a parent project?

Encourage parents to help guide students and offer feedback. To eliminate “mom/dad projects” allow for class time to complete the project. If conferencing and assessing are done regularly, it should naturally prevent a mom/dad project.
